GPD pulls sting on poker machines

These video poker machines were illegal, according to police, and were seized in last week's sting.

Garner Police seized five video poker machines and more than $900 in cash following an anonymous 911 call on March 1. Patrol Sergeant Lorie Smith responded to the Old Tobacco Shack on HWY 70 near Yeargan Road to investigate what was described as ‘suspicious activity.’

Sergeant Smith found five video poker machines inside the store, all in violation of State gambling laws. Current statutes prohibit more than three machines in the same location or within 100 yards of each other. Two machines were also not registered with the local Sheriff’s Office as required by law.

Police allege that storeowner James H. Mullins was part of an illegal “Bingo” operation. Mr. Mullins, of 110 Serenity Drive in Garner, was charged with the following:

NCGS 14-306.1(b)--operating more than three video gaming machines inside the business; and

NCGS 14-306.1(i)--failing to register gaming machines with the local sheriff prior to operation.

Garner Police seized all five machines and more than $900 in cash. Mr. Mullins, 74, is scheduled to appear in court on March 23.

Alcohol Law Enforcement Agent Bill Patterson assisted with the investigation.
