Inside The Big Game
Anyone can take a shot at winning the World Series of Poker, but only the most elite poker players in the world can sit down in the big game at Bellagio. Players like Doyle Brunson, Chip Reese, Phil Ivey, Barry Greenstein, and Jen Harman are regulars in a game which moves more money around the table than I see in a year.
Other than Michael Craig's absolutely brilliant book The Professor, The Banker and The Suicide King, nobody has been able to get particularly close to the big game, but Steve Rosenbloom, author of The Best Hand I Ever Played and colmunist for ESPN.com, recently did:
I get so many questions about the "big game'' at the Bellagio -- the one with Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, Chip Reese, Barry Greenstein, Chau Giang, Jennifer Harman and others -- that I thought it would be beneficial to take three e-mails on the topic and send them to Greenstein. And naturally, Greenstein, author of "Ace on the River,'' a terrific book born out of playing in these types of games, supplied answers and insight.

High Roller Gaming at the Palms
The Palms Casino in Las Vegas has added another feature to their lavish Fantasy Tower - a High Roller gaming lounge opening in February called The Mint. The 5000 sq. foot room has two levels, the main floor of which includes blackjack, roulette, baccarat, poker upon request, a full bar, and a buffet. The top level is much more exclusive (and I am guessing - much more expensive), offering private games, a private bar, and views of the lower level. The entire Fantasy Tower is opening in phases the Hardwood Suite, which features a full basketball court, the Erotic Suite, the Hip Hop Suite, and the Bowling Suite.

UberOrbs, Great Gadget!!
Be warned, UberOrbs are no innocent little desk fiddler, they're the most remarkably addictive magnetic stones on our glorious globe. Made from hematite, these astonishingly powerful space-age magnets are a compulsive's dream. Pull them apart and they zoing back together, throw them in the air and they zing, hold one in your hand and spin the other in dizzy patterns on your desk. Whatever you do with them they are un-put-downable and the magnets are so strong you can feel them pulling together through your hand.
Stainless Steel playing cards, the jet set of card play
Beautifully etched in stainless steel, this outrageous set of Stainless Steel playing cards are the jet set of card play. They come on a large steel sheet that looks so good you'll probably just want to mount them on the wall as a cool 'objet d'art', but if you want to actually play with them, just press them out of the sheet and you'll have possibly the most exclusive and beautiful deck of playing cards on the planet.
WPT Texas Hold'em Pinball
It's official. Poker IS everywhere.Apparently having their logo on everything from shirts and hats to coffee mugs and decks of cards wasn't quite enough - now the World Poker Tour has entered the pinball machine market. The game features the voices of WPT hosts Vince Van Patten and Mike Sexton, as well as hostess Courtney Friel - and for the record, you do actually attempt to play Hold'em as you bounce the ball off the bumpers.
Daniel Negreanu Wins Over $750K Poker Prize at WSOP Circuit Event in Mississippi
This weekend saw poker pro Daniel Negreanu walk away with a purse of over three-quarters of a million dollars. The $755,525 payday comes to Negreanu after a win at the prestigious WSOP circuit event in Tunica. The Canadian, who was competing against dozens of other competitors, took the top prize in the $10,000 buy-in No-Limit Texas Hold 'em main poker event. The win marks a turnaround for Negreanu, who had had a dry spell in poker tournaments as of late.Negreanu seemed quite pleased with his poker-playing performance, at least according to the comment he posted in his personal blog. Crediting himself with staying out of chancy situations, Negreanu attributed his good fortune to making "some good reads" and setting up "the perfect table image against each and every opponent." The evening's final poker hand saw Negreanu holding a higher kicker than second-place finisher Bryant King, who took home over $400,000 as runner-up.

Ferguson Speaks On The Poker World
In 2005, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson had arguably his finest year as a tournament professional. He captured two World Series of Poker Circuit championships at the Harrah's Rincon in March of 2005 and came back in September to win the first Las Vegas stop at Harrah's during the 2006 season of the Circuit. Add into that a final table in Atlantic City in January at the WSOPC, a hotly contested second place finish to Phil Hellmuth at the National Heads Up Poker Championship and several excellent final table stops during the World Series last year which, all total, garnered him over $1.75 million, and many might feel that Ferguson was the best player in 2005.
It’s Nearly a Watch
What time is it? “Two hairs past a freckle, Eastern Elbow Time,” says the Talus AboutTime, the watch that doesn’t really care what time it is. Well, it’s a little more exact than that. It notifies you of the time of day with breezy, insouciant phrases such as, “it’s coming up on a quarter past 8,” or “it’s a bit past 5,” or “it’s nearly 1 thirty.” For those anal types who really must know exactly what time it is, a click of the crown takes you back into the world of “reality-based” timekeeping.
Soldius golf bags solar-charge cellphones, iPods
Because heaven forbid you miss a phone call during your two to four hours on the course, Soldius has introduced a line of golf bags that feature solar panels for charging cellphones and iPods. The Soldius comes with different tips for use with most popular phones, but the iPod adapter will cost you extra. Seems like the perfect addition to our game day must-haves along with the Segway GT golf cart, Quartz Gyrosensor Putter with LCD, nanomaterial golf balls, and stupid talking Hook/Slice swing meter. The Soldius bags cost from $200 for what must be little more than a paper sack to $800 for luxurious, smartphone-worthy leather.

Cingular claims emoticon patent
The next time you try typing an emoticon on your cellphone, be prepared to pay Cingular a royalty. Well, probably not. But companies that develop software or hardware to display smileys (i.e., via dedicated keys or macros) may find themselves in Cingular's crosshairs now that the US Patent and Trademark Office has granted the company a patent for using a "mobile phone (or other device) to select a displayable icon, such as an emoticon, that indicates the mood or emotion of the user.

Absolute Poker to Offer Three Dream Internships

Absolute Poker announced today an innovative new solution to the college internship application process. In order to cut down the stacks of resumes generally associated with premium internship opportunities, Absolute Poker has organized a series of free entry poker tournaments in order to qualify its candidates.
Three university enrolled or recently graduated students will have the opportunity to compete for what many would call the dream internship for the Summer of 2006. “The internship is in Costa Rica with an exciting young poker company. The students will be able to learn and work on the weekdays and play at the beach on the weekends,” commented Benjamin James, Internship Director at Absolute Poker.
Beer Pouring Robot, Finally!

This is it, it has finally happened. I think I can confidently say that regardless of anything else posted here, nothing will ever top this gadget. This is Asahi, a beer pouring robot from Japan. It can refrigerate up to six cans of beer, two mugs, and with a simple push of a button it will pour a beer into the mug with perfect head every time. It gets even better too, this thing is free! Kind of. You have to collect 36 seals found on specially marked Asahi beer, but I wouldn’t have a problem with that.

Cellphone helps Florida man dodge bullet

This sounds like one of those loopy stories that make their way around the world via chain e-mails, until you get 10 copies and are forced to create a dedicated spam filter just to deflect more. But we're going to spring it on you anyhow: A man in Crystal River, Florida, was apparently saved from certain death after being shot twice, when the cellphone in his shirt pocket slowed the bullet enough to keep it from killing him. This is apparently the second report in six months of cellphones protecting shooting victims; in an earlier incident, a man in Sussex, England, was saved by his LG. Oh, and in the Florida case, there's no word on where the second bullet went; maybe the dude's Blackberry protected him from that one. Thanks to engadget.com
Popular Swiss penknife upgrades its memory to 2GB

The specialists at Swissbit have once again proven that there is often far more to something than first meets the eye. The popular Swiss Army penknife, which some would say has attained almost cult status, is now available with USB stick in the rubyRED and retroALOX versions with a 2 GB storage capacity. This is in addition to the normal tools such as scissors, knife, nail file with screw driver and, in the rubyRED version, also LED light and ballpoint pen. For ease of handling and when traveling by air, the USB storage device can simply be detached.
Dating A Poker Pro is Positive EV

What happens when you date a professional poker player and take their advice to the tables? Well, in Jennifer Tilly's case you win two tournaments in one year. Now, another Hollywood personality has been reaping the same benefits - actor Joe Reitman (formerly Mr. Shannon Elizabeth) has obviously been listening to the words and advice of the pro player he is dating - Annie Duke. Thanks to www.cardsquad.com
UA student returns home after poker win of $205,000
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A University of Alabama student who sat out a semester to play in a poker tournament in Australia has won $205,000 playing Texas Hold 'Em with some of the world's best players.
Family and friends gathered at the Birmingham International Airport terminal Sunday to greet Shannon Shorr, 20, of Irondale, who placed fourth in the Aussie Millions Tournament at Melbourne's Crown Casino.
Shorr started playing Internet poker two years ago, but playing for the first time in a live tournament was different.
"You've got to sit there like a stone," Shorr said.
In a starting field of 480 players, he faced off at the final table with the eventual champion Lee Nelson, a New Zealander and author one of the current best-selling books on poker. Despite the outcome, Shorr will be one of the featured players when the tournament airs on television in the United States.
The civil engineering major plans to leave for the Bahamas in about a week to play in the Canadian Poker Championship Main Event.

Poker Babe: Mimi Rogers at HollywoodPoker.com

Fans of actress Mimi Rogers will have the opportunity to play against her tomorrow night at HollywoodPoker.com. To the general population, Rogers is probably best known for her role as Mrs. Kensington in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (and fortunately not best known for being the first Mrs. Tom Cruise), but those involved in the gaming world know that she has been making a name for herself as a force at the poker tables as well.
Mimi placed first in season two of the World Poker Tour's Hollywood Home Game, and also finished in the money at the Bay101 Shooting Star tournament in 2004, placing 27th. If you want to check out the game tomorrow night, it begins at 10pm EST and the buy-in is only $5.

A Picture Worth $3,800: Ultrasound of Angelina Jolie’s Baby sold to Online Casino GoldenPalace.com

Riding the major media wave resulting from the purchase of William Shatner’s kidney stone, internet casino and marketing innovator GoldenPalace.com followed up with another outrageous purchase, the alleged sonogram picture belonging to the world’s most popular fetus; Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s 5-month-old unborn baby.

Poker Craze: Best of the Worst

Time again for the strangest story on the web. When something becomes as popular as poker and online gaming has over the past few years, strange things start popping up. Not content to simply check, raise, bet, or fold, the following people have taken their 'hobby' or business a little too far, in my humble opinion. That or they are bound and determined to cash in on the craze. Either way, I sometimes have to just shake my head and wonder what they were thinking. Here is the strangest story I have found over the past week:
Golden Palace Does it Again
In yet another move to distinguish themselves as the wackiest craziest weirdest strangest most umm...innovative online casino around, GoldenPalace.com has purchased a stone of sorts. Not just any stone, mind you. A kidney stone. Why would they want a kidney stone you may ask? Because it used to be in the body of the Starship Enterprise Captain, of course.
William Shatner apparently agreed to sell the stone to GoldenPalace on two conditions: that the purchase price of $25,000 is to be donated entirely to Habitat for Humanity (which is great) and that he - get this - retains visitation rights. I think the word you are looking here is...anyhoooo....
Hold on to your liver, Wil. That's all I have to say.

Construction With Copper Disks... ummm or more better CHIPS?

These pages are a collection of pictures from a talk I gave while a Civil Engineer at Texas Tech University in 1980. Our senior year we practiced giving technical presentations.
The following is the basic pattern for building cantilevered structures with Pennies. Although it looks trivial, we can build amazing structures with these pillars. All penny columns are ten high, a "stack". Two side-by-side pennies held in place by a penny above them is called a "triad". Below is a stack with two triads resting on top.
