Still playing those mind games

The Amazing Kreskin can't remember his own social security number and occasionally loses his keys, but he also can read minds and make things happen, courtesy of the power of suggestion.

Kreskin will be putting his skills to the test on New Year's Eve, both in his hometown of Montclair and in New York's Times Square.

"What I'll be doing in Montclair is some audience participation," Kreskin said. "I'll be able to tell people what they're thinking. But the big event will occur that night in Times Square."

At 11:15 p.m., Fox News will broadcast Kreskin at work on a head-scratcher of a feat. "You're going to have to see what I have up my sleeve," Kreskin said. "I'm going to show you how a person can imbibe and drive. I'm not advocating drinking and driving. It's a demonstration, which has never been done."

Every year at this time, Kreskin makes like a modern-day Nostradomus and offers his predictions. The witty Kreskin can't help but stick his neck out when it comes to what's up in 2006:

There will be a campaign launched in New Jersey to lure tourists but discourage people from moving here.

"Animal lovers will love this," Kreskin said. "We love the fact that deer come into our back yard. But politicians, developers and criminals aren't going to be so happy with this."

Kreskin isn't very political, but he has a feeling that there may be some changes in Cuba.

"If and when Fidel Castro passes on, his son Raoul will not succeed him. The entire dynasty Castro has set up will collapse. Raoul doesn't have the capacity to take over."

And forget about the Olympics coming to New York in your lifetime.

"I think the Olympics will continue to be removed from the New York City scene," Kreskin said. "Can you imagine the traffic? One of the features of New York on a regular day is paralyzing traffic. Can you imagine it during an Olympic competition?"

Move over, crack cocaine, the next great addiction in America will be poker.

"Look at the young people, university students and beyond, who are fascinated with poker," Kreskin said. "I think it's going to be a very serious problem. Online poker really scares me. You have to drive or fly to a casino. Online poker comes to you via the Internet. It's going to be trouble."

Kreskin foresees a new American vacation destination.

"I think that Baton Rouge is going to take on a heyday that it never really had," Kreskin said. "After the devastating hurricane hit New Orleans and damaged so much of the Southeast, I have a feeling that there will be a renaissance, particularly in Baton Rouge."

Expect movie theaters to try a retro concept in order to boost sluggish box office.

"I have a feeling that double features will return to help save the movie industry," Kreskin said. "Blockbusters like (Peter Jackson's) "King Kong' will do well, but attendance is dropping. Some movie producer will get the brilliant idea that double features will help. Why not have two movies that are an hour and 20 or 30 minutes as opposed to a two-hour movie, which is stretched and padded and not very good?"

Student's striptease posted online

UWO investigates, discipline unlikely
Student knew photos were being taken

Canadian universities have no business, it seems, in the bedrooms of the campus dorm.

Yet thanks to the Internet, everyone else can take a peek.

The University of Western Ontario is investigating an incident in which a female first-year student performed a full striptease and lap dance last week for several males in a residence bedroom, with graphic photos soon sent out over the Internet.

The incident raises questions about how far a university can go in protecting students, particularly younger ones from themselves.

But because the young woman apparently performed willingly in the privacy of a residence room and no one filed a complaint, the school says it likely has no cause for discipline.

"We certainly regret this has happened; it's not something the university condones and we are very disappointed in these students, but rooms in residence are considered to be students' homes, and what goes on between consenting adults in the privacy of their homes is considered to be their business," said Susan Grindrod, Western's vice-president of housing.

"What's different in this case is that these pictures are going all over the world. With the Internet and personal blogs, pictures can be circulated very quickly, and I'm not sure how we would regulate students' blogs and websites even if we wanted to," said Grindrod.

As soon as the raunchy images came to the attention of the administration, officials approached the young woman to ask if she had been forced to strip or tricked into being photographed without her knowledge. She said she had not.

"We were immediately proactive because we wanted to know if there had been any coercion and she told us she was a consenting participant and she was aware that pictures were being taken," said Grindrod.

"If there had been any coercion, there absolutely would have been repercussions. We do plan to talk to the other (male) students involved and continue to review the situation. It's still early in the game for us to have figured out how to proceed."

University dorms have codes of conduct that forbid students from breaking the law. Many take a zero-tolerance approach to students taking drugs and underage drinking, for example.

Western has a policy that forbids the circulation of "objectionable" material such as racist, homophobic or pornographic images, either written or electronic, with extreme cases leading to the student being asked to leave residence.

Yet most universities warn today's highly involved baby boomer parents that campus dorm supervisors will not serve as party police or morality monitors for their children, but will enter a student's room only if there is reason to believe a law is being broken or someone is in danger.

"We're not the alcohol police and we're not sex police, and I'm not sure we would want to be," said Grindrod. "And we recognize that many young people in first year may try out new things that can lead to errors in judgment. I'm not sure some of these misbehaviours haven't gone on in the past. It's just that today, the images can get sent around the world.

"I actually feel badly for all the students involved in this incident. It's a very sad situation."

What is a Internet Troll?

An Internet "troll" is a person who delights in sowing discord on the Internet. He (and it is usually he) tries to start arguments and upset people.

Trolls see Internet communications services as convenient venues for their bizarre game. For some reason, they don't "get" that they are hurting real people. To them, other Internet users are not quite human but are a kind of digital abstraction. As a result, they feel no sorrow whatsoever for the pain they inflict. Indeed, the greater the suffering they cause, the greater their 'achievement' (as they see it). At the moment, the relative anonymity of the net allows trolls to flourish.

Trolls are utterly impervious to criticism (constructive or otherwise). You cannot negotiate with them; you cannot cause them to feel shame or compassion; you cannot reason with them. They cannot be made to feel remorse. For some reason, trolls do not feel they are bound by the rules of courtesy or social responsibility.

Perhaps this sounds inconceivable. You may think, "Surely there is something I can write that will change them." But a true troll can not be changed by mere words.

Mr. Miyagi dead at 73

By TIM MOLLOY, Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES - Actor Pat Morita, whose portrayal of the wise and dry-witted Mr. Miyagi in "The Karate Kid" earned him an Oscar nomination, has died. He was 73.

Morita died Thursday at his home in Las Vegas of natural causes, said his wife of 12 years, Evelyn. She said in a statement that her husband, who first rose to fame with a role on "Happy Days," had "dedicated his entire life to acting and comedy."

In 1984, he appeared in the role that would define his career and spawn countless affectionate imitations. As Kesuke Miyagi, the mentor to Ralph Macchio's "Daniel-san," he taught karate while trying to catch flies with chopsticks and offering such advice as "wax on, wax off" to guide Daniel through chores to improve his skills.

He lost the 1984 best supporting actor award to Haing S. Ngor, who appeared in "The Killing Fields."

"The Karate Kid," led to three sequels, the last of which, 1994's "The Next Karate Kid," paired him with a young Hilary Swank.

He is survived by his wife and three daughters from a previous marriage.

Global participatory "Fool's World Map" project has completed!

This is a project visualizing the world map which many fools in the world imagine.
If you can see this map comfortably, you are definitely a fool.

One day, a Texan asked me a question when I lived in U.S..

The question was "How many hours does it take to go to Japan by car?". (true story)

He didn't know where Japan is, and even bofore that, he didn't know that Japan is an island.
And then, I thought. "What kind of world map is pictured in his mind?"

This was a beginning to think that it might be fun to gather those mixed up recognitions of countries and visualize it as a world map imagined by the fools in the world.

First, the countries are roughly allocated. From now on, countries will be added based on participants' comments. If you "don't know" or "don't even care" about the countries that are added, please submit a comment such as "Huh?" .

comment sample:
Tanzania has been added.
Huh?

If there're many comments or questions like that, relevant country will be downsized or deleted. To the contrary, territory of relevant country will be moved or enlarged if there are comments like "more to the right", "larger". At the same time, comments about positional information of any landmark such as a pyramid of Egypt is appreciated.
