World Poker Challenge Final Table Is Set

The third day of the World Poker Challenge at the Reno Hilton began with 27 players fighting for only six spots at the televised World Poker Tour final table. The three tables that started the day were whittled down to one ten-handed table after only five hours of play.
Chau Giang was the first victim of the day. He was eliminated on the very first hand of play by Fabrice Soulier. Carlos Mortensen also was knocked out early when his pocket jacks ran into the pocket aces of Barry Greenstein. The last woman standing, Liz Lieu, was knocked out in 19th place when her pocket sevens were unable to improve against pocket eights. One of the hottest players on the tournament circuit, Fabrice Soulier, was able to make it to day three. However, he had to settle for a 13th place finish.
Barry Greenstein entered the day in 11th chip position. He quickly took over the chip lead and held it for a majority of the day. At one point, Greenstein had a lead of nearly one million chips over the second place player. Greenstein continued his strong play through the end of the day and enters tomorrow’s final table with $1,085,000 in chips. The chip leader going into play tomorrow is Mike Simon with $1,195,000.
The final six players enter tomorrow’s final table looking to take down the first prize of $1,052,890 plus a $25,000 entry into the WPT Championship at the Bellagio.
The chip counts going into the final table are:
1. Mike Simon $1,195,0002. Barry Greenstein $1,085,0003. Tom Schneider $1,020,0004. Jonas Norrman $905,0005. Jason Stern $880,0006. Greg Mueller $835,000
The final televised table of the World Poker Challenge is set to begin at 3pm PST. Stay tuned to CardPlayer.com for all of the live updates, chip counts, photos, and videos from the action. Source: www.cardplayer.com

The Man Behind March Madness' Biggest Cinderella Story

The man at the heart of what may be college basketball's biggest Cinderella story told his players their long-shot status was irrelevant. And they believed it. George Mason University coach Jim Larranaga recited the words of famed orator William Jennings Bryan to his team, telling his players, "Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice." And they chose to defeat half of last year's Final Four and the two previous national champions in this year's men's NCAA tournament. The Patriots face third-seeded Florida in the semi-finals Saturday. George Mason University — largely a commuter school in suburban Fairfax, Va. — entered the tournament as the underdog of underdogs — an 11th-seeded at-large selection. But somehow it went on to stun top-seeded perennial powerhouse Connecticut with an 86-84 overtime victory to make the Final Four. It is the first team from the Colonial Athletic Association ever to make it this far during March Madness. But if you ask Larranaga, the Huskies couldn't have known what was coming. Before Sunday's game, Larranaga reminded his players that they "know everything there is to know about Connecticut, and the Connecticut players don't know anything about us," he told ESPN's "Cold Pizza." "So I want you guys to know that we're a part of a secret organization … the CAA, the Connecticut Assassins Association," Larranaga said. "And then I started humming the theme song from 'Mission Impossible.'" Keeping It LooseThe mission turned out to be quite possible, and Larranaga is credited with keeping his team loose as it knocked off its opponents and advanced beyond expectations.
"I'm a big believer in Jimmy Valvano's love of the tournament and how much he enjoyed taking his team to the national championship," he told ESPN Radio's "Mike and Mike in the Morning." "I just asked my players to have more fun than any other team, and I promised them that I was going to have more fun than any other coach." Source: abcnews.go.com

Who won last year? Team Costa Rica. Who won the year before that? Team Costa Rica. I'm sensing a trend. Seems to me it is time to shake things up a little.

March Madness: THE FINAL FOUR!!

LSU
■ Preseason projection: The Tigers figured to be somewhere around last year’s 20-10 record, a season that ended with an opening-round NCAA Tournament loss to Alabama-Birmingham. LSU welcomed a nice recruiting class that included Tasmin Mitchell, Magnum Rolle and Garrett Temple. Redshirt freshman Tyrus Thomas would play for the first time this season. But the Tigers figured to miss SEC player of the year Brandon Bass.
■ Regular season: LSU didn’t take December by storm and stood 8-5 after a loss at Connecticut on Jan. 7. But players said they felt good about the team’s direction and rattled off a seven-game winning streak. The Tigers ran away with the West Division title with an SEC-best 14-2 record. Glen “Big Baby” Davis became SEC player of the year as a sophomore, and senior Darrel Mitchell ran the show from the point
■ Postseason: One victory and done in by Florida in the SEC tournament, but the Tigers felt good about their NCAA Tournament situation. A fourth seed in the Atlanta Regional, LSU needed a Mitchell three-pointer with 3.9 seconds left to beat Texas A&M by one. The Tigers then whipped top-seeded Duke and second-seeded Texas in reaching the program’s third Final Four. Thomas and his springs-for-legs dominated the regional.
Florida
■ Preseason projection: The Gators were predicted to be Kentucky’s toughest challenge in the SEC East, but three lost starters and others who accounted for 60 percent of the team’s scoring would make it tough for Florida to match last season’s 12-4 league mark.
■ Regular season: Florida stunned college basketball by racing to a 17-0 start. The schedule wasn’t exactly Murderer’s Row, but Syracuse and three SEC opponents were part of the quick start. Then came a 5-6 middle, which included two losses to East winner Tennessee. The starting lineup consisted of four sophomores, including emerging star Joakim Noah, and they got their act together in time for a regular-season final victory at Kentucky.
■ Postseason: By holding off South Carolina to win the SEC championship, Florida got what appeared to be an inflated No. 3 seed in the Minneapolis regional. But the Gators proved ready for tournament play by blistering South Alabama and Wisconsin-Milwaukee, then holding off Georgetown and Villanova as Noah’s stock as a future pro soared.
UCLA
■ Preseason projection: Somewhere behind Stanford and Arizona, fighting for third with Washington and California was said to be the Bruins’ fate. Coach Ben Howland won 11 games in his first season in Los Angeles two years ago and 18 last season as UCLA returned to the NCAA Tournament. A similar victory total seemed a reasonable goal.
■ Regular season: The Bruins picked up steam throughout the season. By Feb. 2 they had completed a season sweep of Arizona, and four straight victories ending the regular season clinched the Pacific-10 championship. A wonderful backcourt of Jordan Farmar and Arron Afflalo built on last year’s solid freshman seasons. Most games, UCLA controlled the tempo and played rugged defense. It won at Washington State 50-30.
■ Postseason: UCLA hardly broke a sweat sweeping through the Pac-10 tournament at Staples Center and won the No. 2 seed in the Oakland regional. The Bruins were all but beaten by Gonzaga in the regional, trailing by nine with 3:27 remaining. But UCLA scored the game’s last 11 points and pulled out a miracle and then put a defensive hammerlock on top-seed Memphis to gain its 16th Final Four.
George Mason
■ Preseason projection: Defending champion Old Dominion returned most of its roster and was supposed to run away with the Colonial. The Patriots? They returned a nice mix of veterans such as Jai Lewis, Lamar Butler and Tony Skinn, while Folarin Campbell had a good freshman season. But Mason would fight it out with Hofstra and North Carolina-Wilmington for second.
■ Regular season: A 20-point loss to Creighton opening the home schedule didn’t bode well for the Patriots. No great nonleague conquests in December meant George Mason was off the radar screen. But the Patriots were terrific in league play, tying North Carolina-Wilmington for the championship at 15-3 and may have picked up the biggest of all BracketBusters victories, at Wichita State.
■ Postseason : It was a nervous team on Selection Sunday. The Patriots lost in the league tournament semifinals, and national pundits were predicting that if the Colonial landed an at-large spot, it might go to tournament runner-up Hofstra. But George Mason got the nod and an 11th seed in the Washington, D.C., regional. Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut all became part of tournament history in the Patriots amazing odyssey to the Final Four.

Poker News: Fossilman makes another final table

Every Sunday, PokerStars has one of those events where if you make the final table, even ninth place is looking at life-changing money.Yesterday, the Sunday tourney was even bigger than usual, with the buy-in bumped up to $1050, and a resulting prize pool of over 1.5 million dollars. It's no surprise that the top prize of nearly $300,000 drew some of poker's elite players, including my friend and fellow Team PokerStars member Greg "Fossilman" Raymer.Greg made the final table, and eventually finished second (which is, we all know, the new first) for a nice $182,760 payoff.PokerStars usually gets permission from the final tablers to replay the action with hole cards revealed, so it's likely that we'll get to see exactly how Greg made it as far as he did yesterday. The top part of the book is held together thanks to a couple slits in it filled with tacky glue. The bottom is cut out as shown and also kept together with tacky glue, applied on the sides. It keeps it together pretty nicely. The book is held closed by 4 very small magnets, hidden under a couple of pages on the top and bottom outside corners." Source: www.makezine.com

WPT Poker Room at Foxwoods Opens

Foxwoods Resort Casino opened its new poker room yesterday and hottie Carmen Electra and World Poker Tour host Mike Sexton were there to follow the red carpet right into the world’s first WPT-branded poker room.
The expansion gives Foxwoods another 38 tables, bringing its total to 114. It was already the largest poker room in New England, and now it has just about as many tables as any poker room in Atlantic City or Las Vegas. Foxwoods opened in 1992.
According to WPT CEO and founder Steve Lipscomb, the room was designed to evoke the “cool, classy, charismatic” character of the show. Foxwoods was the first casino to sign on with the WPT, and some of the largest prize pools of the show have been won at Foxwoods. The new room should help make future tournament fields even larger.
The WPT has worked to license its brand to companies around the world. It would be tough to find a mall in America that doesn’t have an item bearing the WPT logo. There are also casino table games and video poker and slot machines capitalizing on the WPT brand. It seemed like it was only a matter of time until a WPT-themed poker room would open.
The official name of the room is the WPT Poker Room at Foxwoods. It’s located in a space next to where the old cardroom used to be. The new Fifth Street Café, a 100-seat restaurant, also opened as part of the expansion.
The cardroom uses a computerized seating system and tables with automatic shufflers.

Invisible Cloak Illusion

Gadomsky's technology is completely different than existing methods of optical camouflage that exist today. In 2003, the TACHI laboratory of the University of Tokyo demonstrated an "invisibility cloak" -- which was actually no more than a projection of the image behind the cloak projected back onto the cloak. Gadomsky plans to actually disrupt the radiation in such a manner to "bend" light around the stealthed object behind the nanoparticle wall. Source: mightyillusions.blogspot.com

Poker Teaches: HOW TO - Make "Spinning" vehicle photography

A. The first thing you need is a large level area with enough room to draw a large circle around the object, let’s say a car, in the center. A parking lot is ideal, but If all you can find is dirt or gravel, you can mark the ground with spikes or nails instead of chalk. Find a spot in the middle of your space and mark it with chalk. This will be the center point of our circle. Anchor one end of your rope to this point or have a friend hold the rope to this point. Tie a piece of chalk to the other end at the distance that you want the radius of your circle to be. Now draw the circle. For this example, I will be doing a half circle. Once you have drawn a circle, each of you stands on opposite sides of the circle and pull the rope tight. Position yourselves so that the center of the rope is directly over the center of your circle. Mark you and your partner’s place on the outside of the circle. These points are the beginning and end of where we will be taking photos.
B. Now we have to find the point on our circle half way between our start and end points. To do that, think back to your geometry class. Make 2 arcs using the start and end points as the center. Then hold the string from the center of our first large circle through where our two new arcs intersected and mark this point on our original circle. It is easier to show you a diagram than to explain.
C. Now we have a starting point, an ending point, and a middle point. Now we simply mark the points half way between them. To do this, we basically do the same things as step B.
D. Repeat this process of dividing our circle until you have as many points as you need. Since we are dividing the circle equally, the number of points will go from 3 to 5 to 9 to 17 to 33 to 65, etc. The ideal number is probably 33 because that gives you about a second of video at 30 frames per second.
E. Now that our map is finished, we are ready to start taking photos. Move your car so that the center of the car is over the center point of our circle. Lock your camera into your tripod, and take one photo from each point on our circle. To make sure that your tripod is in the same position for each shot, have each leg of the tripod sit on the circle and center.
F. Now you should have 33 photos of the car. Each photo becomes a frame in our movie. There are several ways to make a movie. You can use Quicktime Pro to turn the series of images into a .mov, or use Photoshop to create an animated gif. Obviously, you are going to have the background in each shot, so if you want a silhouette like my example above, you are going to need to cut out the vehicle in each frame and replace the background with white. This is quite tedious, but the result is worth it.

Odds of Dying - NSC

What are the odds of dying?

The table below was prepared in response to frequent inquiries, especially from the media, asking questions such as, "What are the odds of being killed by lightning?" or "What are the chances of dying in a plane crash?"

The table has four columns. The first column gives the manner of injury such as motor-vehicle crash, fall, fire, etc. The second column gives the total number of deaths nationwide due to the manner of injury in 2002 (the latest year for which data are available). The third column gives the odds of dying in one year due to the manner of injury. The fourth column gives the lifetime odds of dying from the manner of injury. Statements about the odds or chances of dying from a given cause of death may be made as follows:

* The odds of dying from (manner of injury) in 2002 were 1 in (value given in the one-year odds column).
* The life-time odds of dying from (manner of injury) for a person born in 2002 were 1 in (value given in the lifetime odds column).

For example, referring to the first line of the table below:

* The odds of dying from an injury in 2002 were 1 in 1,755.
* The lifetime odds of dying from an injury for a person born in 2002 were 1 in 23.

Crazy Poker: Ex-teacher sues over noisy chair

A British teacher who says a noisy chair made classroom life a misery is suing her former employer for unfair dismissal.
Sue Storer, 48, told an employment tribunal Tuesday she was subjected to sexist and bullying behavior while working as deputy head teacher at Bedminster Down Secondary School in Bristol, southwest England.
Storer said the school failed to replace her chair, which made a "farting" noise whenever anyone sat on it, although other staff received new chairs.
She said the chair was a source of embarrassment, especially at parent-teacher evenings.
She also said male colleagues were favored over her and she was placed under an unfair amount of pressure.
"I had a nervous breakdown because of the ordeal I went through. It's just not fair that people can treat you like that," said Storer, who resigned in September. She said she would never teach again.
She is seeking a ruling that the school's behavior amounted to unfair dismissal and sexual discrimination, as well as compensation for lost earnings. The tribunal is expected to rule within the next two weeks. Source: www.davesdaily.com

March Madness: Memphis Tigers Praise NCAA Foe Bradley

The Memphis Tigers are downplaying speculation that their regional tourney match-up Thursday night against Bradley will be a mismatch. Forward Shawne Williams said Wednesday that the upstart Braves are a top, elite team. Memphis is the Number 1 seed and Bradley is 13th. Tigers coach John Calipari opted not to have his team watch tape of the Braves, instead asking them to focus only on what they need to get done. The Braves were loose during their shoot around Thursday at the Oakland Arena, even holding a dunk contest at the end. On the interview podium, players chuckled and looked to each other to answer questions. Coach Jim Les laughed and joked around right along with them. Bradley got this far by shocking fourth-seeded Kansas in its NCAA opener, then beating Number 5 Pittsburgh.

Calvin Ayre Sponsors World Champion Foosball Player for Second Year

Foosball is making a big comeback
When Costa Rica native Carlos Cespedes Martinez cemented his place as one of the globe’s top table soccer players with a silver medal at the 2005 World Foosball Championships, many of his fans were proud – one in particular was simply ecstatic. Among Martinez’s biggest fans is online gambling pioneer and fellow Costa Rica resident Calvin Ayre. The CEO of Bodog.com announced Wednesday that he would be sponsoring the Costa Rican foosball sensation for a second year in a row.
"We are extremely proud to be backing Carlos once again. Carlos has a proven track record, and I anticipate great success at the upcoming VIFA International Championship," says Calvin Ayre, who also serves as Chairman of the Calvin Ayre Foundation, and was recently the subject of Forbes magazine cover story. "As I’ve always maintained, for most of us, foosball is a fun pastime, but when you see it played at its highest level – as Carlos plays it – you gain a higher appreciation for the game."

POKER DRINK

Poker DrinkWhile its not exactly a gadget, I found this yesterday in my power-surfing sessions, and got very excited. I hope fellow coffee affectionados will appreciate the heads up!

It seems that the Coca-Cola Company is test marketing a new coffee/cola fusion beverage in both France and Phoenix, Arizona at the present time.

Coca-Cola Blak is being touted as "an invigorating and stimulating blend that has a perfect balance of the effervescent taste sensation of Coca-Cola and natural flavors, with real coffee."

Recently, Coca-Cola has been reaching out to new markets, and Coca-Cola Blak is a continuance of this trend, designed to appeal to adult consumers.

The beverage is said to have a rich, smooth texture, and has a coffee-like froth when poured. "This brand is ideal for any part of the day when people are looking for renewed energy or simply to take a break," said Marc Mathieu, vice president, Global Core Brands, The Coca-Cola Company.

As a compulsive coffee drinker and caffiene addict, I will be watching for the release of this one - Coke I think you've got a real winner with Coca-Cola Blak!

Shot of March Madness

The desperation shot fell through the basket. The buzzer screamed. Then Dion Harris was lost in the middle of a mob of University of Michigan basketball players.
But at that moment, the junior wasn't thinking about his game-winning 3-pointer.
"It was just like: 'I finally get to rest now,' '' Harris said. "We were real tired out there.''
After two overtimes and 50 minutes of basketball, Harris' shot gave Michigan an 87-84 win over Notre Dame in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament at Crisler Arena.
Harris' season, like Michigan's, has been filled with ups and downs. He struggled with an ankle injury, then couldn't find his shooting rhythm when he returned last month. All of that seemed far away - even Michigan's narrow miss on advancing to the NCAA Tournament earlier this month - as Harris lounged in front of his locker Monday night.
Michigan (20-10) hosts Miami (Fla.) at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Crisler Arena in the NIT quarterfinals.
"I don't think we had a game like that all season, since I've been here,'' Harris said. "We just kept fighting, no matter what happened. We never stopped playing. That was the difference.''

Bellagio’s 2006 4th Annual Five-Star World Poker Classic kicks off April 5th with two-day no-limit hold’em tournaments, including a seniors event and “a last chance to qualify” super satellite. One-table qualifiers will run day and night, throughout the course of the each scheduled event, for the next day’s tournament.
“Bellagio is excited to host the WPT World Championship for the fourth consecutive year as the grand finale of the 5 Star World Poker Classic,” said Doug Dalton, Director of Poker Operations at Bellagio. “The number of participants increases every tournament and the prize pools continue to set new highs. We are proud to be part of this phenomenon.”
Tuan Le will return to defend last year’s WPT Championship title, which included a bracelet, the trophy, a silver platter and, of course, the money. Le outlasted a field of 452 players to reach the exciting up and down final table. Le, who was severely short-stacked, rebounded to survive blinds, bluffs and fate and won $2,856,150. Second place finisher, Paul Maxfield, took home nearly $1.7 million.
This season, the WPT qualified over a dozen champions, including Grand Prix de Paris winner, Roland De Wolfe. Other slotted participants include Mirage Poker Showdown winner, Gavin Smith; Legends champion, Alex Kahaner; Borgata Poker Open’s Al Ardebili; Ultimatebet’s Aruba winner, Freddie Deeb; Foxwood’s, Nick Schulman; Bellagio Five Diamond’s Rehne Pedersen; PokerStars Caribbean Poker Adventure winner, Steve Paul-Ambrose; Gold Strike’s, Scotty “The Prince” Nguyen; L.A. How To Win At Monopoly - Board Game

There's a strong element of luck involved in playing Monopoly, but there's also enough strategy so that skilled players will win more often than not. Follow this plan and you'll be smiling all the way to Boardwalk.

Difficulty: Average

Time Required: n/a

Here's How:

1. Know the odds. Most players make a complete lap around the board in five turns; you're likely to roll doubles once in those five turns (doubles happen about 17 percent of the time).

2. Buy smart. Always pick up available properties if: (1) no other player owns one of the same group; (2) the purchase would give you two or three of the same group; or (3) it blocks someone else from completing a set.

3. Remember that Illinois Avenue is the square most often landed on (not including Jail). The B&O Railroad also is among those most landed on; Go rounds out the top three.

4. Railroads are better to own than utilities, but utilities should be purchased if the opportunity arises (especially if you can get both of them). Short Line is the least useful railroad to own, because it is visited least often.

5. Get out of jail quickly early in the game, even if you have to pay the $50. Later on, when moving around the board is more dangerous, stay in jail as long as you can.

6. When you build, get to three houses as quickly as possible. The rent raises significantly between two and three houses. For example, rent on Illinois Avenue jumps from $300 to $750.

7. If you're stuck with low-income properties, build to four houses quickly to create a building shortage, hurting other players' chances to build. 24 of 32 houses (or 6 of 12 hotels) could be tied up on just six properties.

8. Avoid mortgaging properties where you own two or more of the properties. If one property in a group is mortgaged, you cannot build on any of the properties in that group.

9. The second set of properties on all four sides of the board is a better investment. One reason: houses and hotels cost the same to build as for the first set of properties, but the rent is higher.

10. The trio of orange properties is an excellent monopoly to own because of their relationship to Jail. A roll of 6 or 8 (two of the most common rolls) from Jail lands you on an orange.

Tips:

1. Show no mercy. If a player is down, eliminate him from the game. Luck plays too big a roll in Monopoly to risk a comeback.
2. Don't forget that you can buy houses, make trades, etc., on your turn or between the turns of any other players.

How To Read 12 Digit UPC Barcodes

Most barcodes in the US are 12-digit UPC barcodes, with ten digits at the bottom of the code and one small number to each side. Impress your friends by asking them to select a random item from the kitchen with a removable label and cut the numbers off of the UPC barcode; you can then proceed to read the numbers encoded in the lines.
Steps

1. Note that barcodes are made up of both black and white lines. The white spaces in between the black lines are part of the code.
2. Understand that there are four different thicknesses to the lines. Henceforth, the skinniest line will be referred to as "1," the medium-sized line as "2," the next largest line as "3." and the thickest is "4."
3. Each UPC barcode begins and ends with 111 (thin black, thin white, thin black). In the very middle of the barcode, you will notice two thin black lines sticking down between the numbers. The thin white between them, as well as the thin whites to either side, make up a 11111. Each UPC barcode has 11111 in the middle. Image:UPC_EANUCC 12_barcode.png
4. Recognize that each digit, including the small numbers that begin and end the barcode, has its own unique four-line set. 0 = 3211, 1 = 2221, 2 = 2122, 3 = 1411, 4 = 1132, 5 = 1231, 6 = 1114, 7 = 1312, 8 = 1213, 9 = 3112. (Note that the sum of bar widths numbers is 7 for all codes because each code is 7 units wide.)
5. So, the barcode above whose first two digits are 03 would start out "11132111411". Broken down this is "111-3211-1411" where 111 marks the beginning of the bar code and 3211 marks the digit 0 .

Tips

* Barcodes from soda cans, books, video store rentals, and all the rest which are fewer than 12 digits only use the white/black/white/black scheme.
* Memorizing the thickness of each line size takes some time (as does memorizing each digits line sequence), but it becomes easier with practice.
* Notice that the line colors are reversed after the center-line: The lines of the digits to the left are white/black/white/black whilst to the right they are black/white/black/white. This provides some error checking and allows the reader to know the direction in which it is scanning a code. So, actually, each digit has two codes.
* Recognize that each digit is made up of seven equally spaced lines. So you can see from the image above that the digit 4 is made up of the 7 black and white lines in the order of 1011100 where 1 is black and 0 is white. These seven small lines become 1132 in the simplified thick or thin line system.
* The first code is the manufacturer of the product. Many times the "Brand-X" is made by the same manufacturer (e.g., Prestone antifreeze and the Advanced Autoparts generic, 3M "Post-its" and the generic sold at OfficeMax). While there's no guarantee the quality is the same, it's probably just the same item with different coloration in a different package.
* When the numbers that the barcode represents are printed below the bars, the first and last digits are often printed outside of the bars. While the first number is part of the company number, the last number is a check digit (known as a Mod 10 check digit). This number is calculated based on the other digits in the number.

Warnings

* You will not do well if you have poor eyesight.
* Outside the US & Canada, the similar 13-digit EAN barcode system is more prevalent. The EAN contains an additional digit used as part of a country code.

Things You'll Need

* A 12-digit UPC barcode
* Good Eyesight

March Madness: Lofton shot a perfect Tenn.

Chris Lofton wasn't the first option for Tennessee on what turned out to be the biggest shot of his life.
"The first option was Andre (Patterson)," said Tennessee's Dane Bradshaw.
But when Bradshaw couldn't get a clear look at the Vols' 6-7 senior on the inbounds, Plan B had Lofton's name written all over it.
"I was able to get Chris on a curl," Bradshaw said. "Major Wingate (15 points) set him a pretty good screen and opened him up just enough."
Just enough for Bradshaw to find Lofton deep in the right corner, with Winthrop's Torrell Martin practically in his hip pocket.
But Lofton let fly over Martin's outstretched hand and when the shot found nothing but net with 0.4 seconds to play, No. 2 Tennessee had escaped what would have been a monumental upset at the hands of No. 15 Winthrop and come away with a 63-61 victory yesterday at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Tennessee (22-7), which had dropped its previous four NCAA games to lower-seeded teams, will face No. 7 Wichita State in a second-round Washington, D.C., Regional game tomorrow.
"Coach (Bruce Pearl) just called a simple play that he made up in 30 seconds," said Lofton, who had shot just 4-of-13 before his game-winner and finished with 12 points.
"I didn't get a real clear look. I just saw the goal and fired it up there."
Winthrop (23-8) had one last chance to send the game into overtime. But the Eagles' inbounds pass smacked off the backboard at the far end, ricocheting off the hands of Patterson (12 points) before winding up in the hands of Winthrop's Craig Bradshaw.
Bradshaw's short jumper missed, but the shot might not have counted had it gone.

'South Park'-Scientology Big Battle Rages On

Tom Cruise told Viacom, parent company of Paramount and Comedy Central that he would refuse to promote Mission Impossible 3 if the controversial and hilarious South Park episode which attacks Scientology and hints that he is gay, was not cancelled Wednesday. Cruise apparently won. The episode was cancelled per Tom's demands. Viacom, which is banking on MI3 to be a summer blockbuster, told South Park series creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, not to discuss this matter to avoid embarrassing Cruise as they did Isaac Hayes last week when the actor, also a Scientologist, quit his role as the voice of "Chef". Hayes claimed that "bigotry and intolerance toward religious beliefs" led to his decision, but Stone pointed out that "Hayes had cashed plenty of checks while the show made fun of Christianity, Judaism and Islam." Tom Cruise has a history of being a Hollywood bully and is reportedly responsible for Katie Holmes' missing sex scene in her upcoming film, Thank You For Smoking.

March Madness Strikes Local Businesses

Thursday marks one of the best times of the year for basketball fans and one of the worst for their bosses. For proof, consider this. More than forty percent of the workforce watches college basketball for at least 13 minutes a day. That adds up to almost $240 million in worker productivity losses per day. "It's hard to swallow," said Victor Gillett, Vice President of Sales with John Hancock Investments. "It's like taking a couple of sick days, and the amount of productivity that gets lost is traumatic, in hard dollars."That's why Gillett and a growing number of Austin bosses have decided that if you can't beat 'em, join 'em at lunch."I think it's a win-win becuase people are happier because they get to watch the game, and I think happier people are more productive," said John McClusky, a financial advisor. "We can still talk business, and who says you can't do that over lunch or catching a game. People do it on the golf course."Gillett said it's the second year that his staff from John Hancock Investments has been taking this approach.

Crazy Poker: Wrong Bed!!!

March Madness a la King

There's only one better way to watch the NCAA Basketball Tournament than comfortably seated in a Las Vegas sports book with a Bloody Mary in one hand and a betting slip in the other: That would be in Elvis' TV room at Graceland, eating fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches and tuning in to the games with the King himself.
Starting Thursday, millions of normally hardworking Americans will take a break from their breadwinning in order to view a few hours of college basketball. From cubicles and corner offices alike, obsessed hoop fans will excuse themselves for a few minutes, or in some cases hours, to gather at the nearest sports bar or conference room to check on their alma mater's performance -- or maybe just to update their office pool, all of which reportedly costs corporate America billions in lost productivity.
But all these manic hoop fans -- and their employers -- would be much better off if they just dropped the charade and hopped a plane to Las Vegas, where you will find the four necessities for serious March Madness enjoyment: comfortable chairs, multiple big-screen TVs, Bloody Marys and, of course, sports betting.

Extreme Poker Tournament To Be Held In in a snow castle in Finland

As if poker in a normal card room is not tough enough, online poker players will now compete for a spot in the InterPoker Extreme Poker event, which will be held in sub-zero temperature in a snow castle in Finland...
Finnish poker pro Juha Helppi was given the option to choose the venue for the next Extreme Poker Event, after he had won the first one 30-feet underwater, in the waters off of St. Kitts in the Caribbean.
Juha obviously went for home advantage, and will feel confident competing in his own back yard - the arctic fields of Finland. The event is to take place on March 29. March 29.
An InterPoker spokesperson said: "Juha has obvious home advantage, but our Internet qualifiers will all be in with a shot to take his title away."
The Snow Castle was built using 60,000 cubic feet of snow and ice, and the temperature consistently remains below freezing point. "The castle is a beautiful venue and the conditions are similar to where I grew up. Hopefully I can take advantage of the conditions".
