World Poker Tour gains broadcast rights in Asia

WPT Enterprises Inc. has secured a pair of broadcasting deals to bring the World Poker Tour television shows to southeast Asia.

The World Poker Tour's first season will be aired on Macau Cable in Macau and feature the second season on MediaCorp, the largest broadcaster in Singapore.

The deal in Macau, a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China, is important due to its status as a large gambling center.

"With the long history of gaming in Macau and the recent licenses issued to a number of international gaming giants who will build or run major new casinos, this area is only going to get hotter," Gary MacKinney, WPTE executive director of international distribution, said in a statement.

Los Angeles' WPTE is the parent of the World Poker Tour and is a majority owned subsidiary of Minnetonka, Minn.-based Lakes Entertainment Inc.

Crazy Poker: Online Casino Buys Martin Luther King’s Assassin’s Bathtub

Online casino GoldenPalace.com added another piece of history to their impressive collection of eccentric historical items with their latest eBay purchase, the bathtub that James Earl Ray was standing in when he shot Martin Luther King in 1968.

The bathtub was sold for $7,600. Memphis judge D'Army Bailey, the seller of the tub, is one of the founders of the National Civil Rights Museum located at the site of King's death. He bought the tub in 1983 when the former rooming house was being renovated.

Bailey first tried to sell the tub on eBay in 2004. Although the bid price went up to $152,000, eBay removed it because it might be considered offensive, particularly by King's family.

The auction site then decided that it met their criteria for historical artifacts and allowed to be put back up for auction.

Bailey said he has been assured the casino will treat the tub "with sensitivity for its historical significance."

A portion of the purchase price for the bathtub will go to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Memphis, Inc., whose mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of children and youth.

“We are proud to have bought this piece of American history and help a worthy cause by doing so,” said GoldenPalace.com CEO Richard Rowe. “Martin Luther King continues to touch people’s lives, and we will treat this item with respect worthy of his memory and legacy.”

Setting the standard in marketing creativity, GoldenPalace.com has devised some of the most exciting and outrageous advertising campaigns in the past few years.

Items such as the Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese Sandwich, Britney Spears’ Pregnancy Test, and William Shatner’s Kidney Stone have garnered extensive worldwide media attention for the casino. GoldenPalace.com has also used their items and marketing reach to raise awareness and over $1,000,000 for various charities worldwide. Source: www.goldenpalaceevents.com

Google Earth Fans!, try to find Eva longoria's supersized Maxim Cover

For air travelers flying over southern Nevada this week, the view offers more than miles of dusty desert. A giant, bikini-clad Hollywood star perched on the desert sands isn't a mirage, but a recreation of a Maxim magazine cover.

The cover is made of a vinyl-mesh screen and reads, "THE ONLY MAGAZINE BIG ENOUGH TO BE SEEN FROM SPACE — AND ONLY IN VEGAS!" A barely dressed Eva Longoria, star of ABC's "Desperate Housewives," graces the 75-by-110-foot display just outside Primm, near the California state line.

The cover is part of several days of events celebrating the magazine's 100-issue milestone, including poker and golf tournaments at the Wynn Las Vegas hotel-casino, a Maxim public relations representative said this week. Source: brainerddispatch.com

March Madness: NCAA Winner!! Florida Beats UCLA 73-57

The Florida Gators won the NCAA men's championship last night, blowing out the UCLA Bruins 73-57.

Joakim Noah dominated the Bruins on Monday night with 16 points, nine rebounds and a record six blocks for Florida's first title in that other sport.

``It's like I'm in a cloud,'' Noah said. ``Not only does this feel good, but it smells good and it tastes good. I can't even describe it.''

The Gators and all their fans would certainly agree, especially after watching this runaway - a pick-your-score kind of game that was decided early.

Many thought it couldn't be done 10 years ago when Billy Donovan took over a basketball program that lived well in the shadows of Steve Spurrier's brash, high-flying football juggernaut.
Now, Spurrier is long gone and the Gators have as many national championships in hoops as they do in football.

``It's undescribable,'' said Noah, who now will decide whether to turn pro, ``better than I've ever felt in my life.''

For 40 lopsided minutes, the Gators (33-6) were too big, too long and too quick for UCLA, which came up a win short of its 12th national title on a night when 95-year-old former coach John Wooden watched from a hospital bed in LA. He was admitted for an undisclosed illness that was said not to be serious, but the Bruins didn't try to use that distraction as an excuse.

``Our heart and everything we do on the floor is always a tribute to him, whether he's healthy or not,'' UCLA guard Arron Afflalo said.

Florida and Noah, voted most outstanding player in the Final Four, won by putting on a thorough display of versatility and unselfishness, a trademark of this team all season.

Negreanu Poker Tip: Using odds to make your investment wisely

When you watch poker on TV, you hear the term pot odds thrown around all the time. What in the world does it really mean? Well, hopefully, after you read this column you’ll not only know what pot odds are, but you’ll also understand how to quickly calculate pot odds and apply them to your game.
Step 1 – Figuring the Pot Odds
This is the easy part. You count what's already in the pot and add it to the amount of the bet you are facing. You then compare that sum to the amount your opponent has bet. So again, if there was, for example, $200 in the pot and your opponent bets $20, your pot odds would be 11 to 1 ($220/$20= 11 to 1).
Okay, so now that you know what your pot odds are, it's time to figure out if you are getting the right price to continue playing the hand.
Step 2 – Figuring Your Actual Odds
This can be a little more difficult depending on the situation. You can find a table of actual odds in almost any poker book on the market. Another option is to pick up some simulation software that will calculate the odds for you. But since you obviously won't have access to a book or software right there on the spot, here’s how to figure out your actual odds while seated there at the table.
The first thing you need to do is count your outs — meaning the number of remaining cards that will improve your hand. Then compare that number to
the total number of unseen cards still in the deck. Source: amcostarica

World Poker Challenge Final Table Is Set

The third day of the World Poker Challenge at the Reno Hilton began with 27 players fighting for only six spots at the televised World Poker Tour final table. The three tables that started the day were whittled down to one ten-handed table after only five hours of play.
Chau Giang was the first victim of the day. He was eliminated on the very first hand of play by Fabrice Soulier. Carlos Mortensen also was knocked out early when his pocket jacks ran into the pocket aces of Barry Greenstein. The last woman standing, Liz Lieu, was knocked out in 19th place when her pocket sevens were unable to improve against pocket eights. One of the hottest players on the tournament circuit, Fabrice Soulier, was able to make it to day three. However, he had to settle for a 13th place finish.
Barry Greenstein entered the day in 11th chip position. He quickly took over the chip lead and held it for a majority of the day. At one point, Greenstein had a lead of nearly one million chips over the second place player. Greenstein continued his strong play through the end of the day and enters tomorrow’s final table with $1,085,000 in chips. The chip leader going into play tomorrow is Mike Simon with $1,195,000.
The final six players enter tomorrow’s final table looking to take down the first prize of $1,052,890 plus a $25,000 entry into the WPT Championship at the Bellagio.
The chip counts going into the final table are:
1. Mike Simon $1,195,0002. Barry Greenstein $1,085,0003. Tom Schneider $1,020,0004. Jonas Norrman $905,0005. Jason Stern $880,0006. Greg Mueller $835,000
The final televised table of the World Poker Challenge is set to begin at 3pm PST. Stay tuned to CardPlayer.com for all of the live updates, chip counts, photos, and videos from the action. Source: www.cardplayer.com

The Man Behind March Madness' Biggest Cinderella Story

The man at the heart of what may be college basketball's biggest Cinderella story told his players their long-shot status was irrelevant. And they believed it. George Mason University coach Jim Larranaga recited the words of famed orator William Jennings Bryan to his team, telling his players, "Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice." And they chose to defeat half of last year's Final Four and the two previous national champions in this year's men's NCAA tournament. The Patriots face third-seeded Florida in the semi-finals Saturday. George Mason University — largely a commuter school in suburban Fairfax, Va. — entered the tournament as the underdog of underdogs — an 11th-seeded at-large selection. But somehow it went on to stun top-seeded perennial powerhouse Connecticut with an 86-84 overtime victory to make the Final Four. It is the first team from the Colonial Athletic Association ever to make it this far during March Madness. But if you ask Larranaga, the Huskies couldn't have known what was coming. Before Sunday's game, Larranaga reminded his players that they "know everything there is to know about Connecticut, and the Connecticut players don't know anything about us," he told ESPN's "Cold Pizza." "So I want you guys to know that we're a part of a secret organization … the CAA, the Connecticut Assassins Association," Larranaga said. "And then I started humming the theme song from 'Mission Impossible.'" Keeping It LooseThe mission turned out to be quite possible, and Larranaga is credited with keeping his team loose as it knocked off its opponents and advanced beyond expectations.
"I'm a big believer in Jimmy Valvano's love of the tournament and how much he enjoyed taking his team to the national championship," he told ESPN Radio's "Mike and Mike in the Morning." "I just asked my players to have more fun than any other team, and I promised them that I was going to have more fun than any other coach." Source: abcnews.go.com

Who won last year? Team Costa Rica. Who won the year before that? Team Costa Rica. I'm sensing a trend. Seems to me it is time to shake things up a little.

March Madness: THE FINAL FOUR!!

LSU
■ Preseason projection: The Tigers figured to be somewhere around last year’s 20-10 record, a season that ended with an opening-round NCAA Tournament loss to Alabama-Birmingham. LSU welcomed a nice recruiting class that included Tasmin Mitchell, Magnum Rolle and Garrett Temple. Redshirt freshman Tyrus Thomas would play for the first time this season. But the Tigers figured to miss SEC player of the year Brandon Bass.
■ Regular season: LSU didn’t take December by storm and stood 8-5 after a loss at Connecticut on Jan. 7. But players said they felt good about the team’s direction and rattled off a seven-game winning streak. The Tigers ran away with the West Division title with an SEC-best 14-2 record. Glen “Big Baby” Davis became SEC player of the year as a sophomore, and senior Darrel Mitchell ran the show from the point
■ Postseason: One victory and done in by Florida in the SEC tournament, but the Tigers felt good about their NCAA Tournament situation. A fourth seed in the Atlanta Regional, LSU needed a Mitchell three-pointer with 3.9 seconds left to beat Texas A&M by one. The Tigers then whipped top-seeded Duke and second-seeded Texas in reaching the program’s third Final Four. Thomas and his springs-for-legs dominated the regional.
Florida
■ Preseason projection: The Gators were predicted to be Kentucky’s toughest challenge in the SEC East, but three lost starters and others who accounted for 60 percent of the team’s scoring would make it tough for Florida to match last season’s 12-4 league mark.
■ Regular season: Florida stunned college basketball by racing to a 17-0 start. The schedule wasn’t exactly Murderer’s Row, but Syracuse and three SEC opponents were part of the quick start. Then came a 5-6 middle, which included two losses to East winner Tennessee. The starting lineup consisted of four sophomores, including emerging star Joakim Noah, and they got their act together in time for a regular-season final victory at Kentucky.
■ Postseason: By holding off South Carolina to win the SEC championship, Florida got what appeared to be an inflated No. 3 seed in the Minneapolis regional. But the Gators proved ready for tournament play by blistering South Alabama and Wisconsin-Milwaukee, then holding off Georgetown and Villanova as Noah’s stock as a future pro soared.
UCLA
■ Preseason projection: Somewhere behind Stanford and Arizona, fighting for third with Washington and California was said to be the Bruins’ fate. Coach Ben Howland won 11 games in his first season in Los Angeles two years ago and 18 last season as UCLA returned to the NCAA Tournament. A similar victory total seemed a reasonable goal.
■ Regular season: The Bruins picked up steam throughout the season. By Feb. 2 they had completed a season sweep of Arizona, and four straight victories ending the regular season clinched the Pacific-10 championship. A wonderful backcourt of Jordan Farmar and Arron Afflalo built on last year’s solid freshman seasons. Most games, UCLA controlled the tempo and played rugged defense. It won at Washington State 50-30.
■ Postseason: UCLA hardly broke a sweat sweeping through the Pac-10 tournament at Staples Center and won the No. 2 seed in the Oakland regional. The Bruins were all but beaten by Gonzaga in the regional, trailing by nine with 3:27 remaining. But UCLA scored the game’s last 11 points and pulled out a miracle and then put a defensive hammerlock on top-seed Memphis to gain its 16th Final Four.
George Mason
■ Preseason projection: Defending champion Old Dominion returned most of its roster and was supposed to run away with the Colonial. The Patriots? They returned a nice mix of veterans such as Jai Lewis, Lamar Butler and Tony Skinn, while Folarin Campbell had a good freshman season. But Mason would fight it out with Hofstra and North Carolina-Wilmington for second.
■ Regular season: A 20-point loss to Creighton opening the home schedule didn’t bode well for the Patriots. No great nonleague conquests in December meant George Mason was off the radar screen. But the Patriots were terrific in league play, tying North Carolina-Wilmington for the championship at 15-3 and may have picked up the biggest of all BracketBusters victories, at Wichita State.
■ Postseason : It was a nervous team on Selection Sunday. The Patriots lost in the league tournament semifinals, and national pundits were predicting that if the Colonial landed an at-large spot, it might go to tournament runner-up Hofstra. But George Mason got the nod and an 11th seed in the Washington, D.C., regional. Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut all became part of tournament history in the Patriots amazing odyssey to the Final Four.

Poker News: Fossilman makes another final table

Every Sunday, PokerStars has one of those events where if you make the final table, even ninth place is looking at life-changing money.Yesterday, the Sunday tourney was even bigger than usual, with the buy-in bumped up to $1050, and a resulting prize pool of over 1.5 million dollars. It's no surprise that the top prize of nearly $300,000 drew some of poker's elite players, including my friend and fellow Team PokerStars member Greg "Fossilman" Raymer.Greg made the final table, and eventually finished second (which is, we all know, the new first) for a nice $182,760 payoff.PokerStars usually gets permission from the final tablers to replay the action with hole cards revealed, so it's likely that we'll get to see exactly how Greg made it as far as he did yesterday.
