Monkey see, monkey go all-in

When given a choice between steady rewards and the chance for more, monkeys will gamble, a new study found.
And they'll keep taking risks as the stakes rise and dry spells get longer.
The research, in which scientists also pinpointed brain activity during the gambling, could provide insight into the human penchant for risk.

The male rhesus macaque monkeys were shown either of two lights on a screen. Looking at a "safe" light yielded the same fruit juice reward each time. Looking at the "risky" light meant a larger or smaller juice reward. In the first test, the average reward was the same over time regardless of which light they chose.

The monkeys overwhelmingly preferred to gamble, even when the game was changed so that gambling yielded less juice over time.

"There was no rational reason why monkeys might prefer one of these options over the other because, according to the theory of expected value, they're identical," said Duke University Medical Center neurobiologist Michael Platt.

Okay fine. So let's change the odds. In test two, the researchers made the average payoff for the risky target less than for the safe target.

"We found that they still preferred the risky target," Platt said. "Basically these monkeys really liked to gamble."

Platt and his colleague, Allison McCoy, fiddled with the odds even more, forcing a string of losses. But something kept the monkeys going, they reported in the Aug. 14 issue of the journal Nature Neuroscience.

"It seemed very, very similar to the experience of people who are compulsive gamblers," Platt points out. "While it's always dangerous to anthropomorphize, it seemed as if these monkeys got a high out of getting a big reward that obliterated any memory of all the losses that they would experience following that big reward."

The researchers then wired electrodes into a part of the monkeys' brains that, in humans and animals, is known to process information on rewards.

"As we increased the riskiness of a target, the neurons' activity would go up in the same way the monkey's frequency of choosing that target would go up," Platt said. "It was amazing the degree to which the activity of these neurons paralleled the behavior of the monkeys. They looked like they were signaling, in fact, the monkeys' subjective valuation of that target."

More work is needed to map the entire circuitry involved in the process, the scientists say. Then, studies could possibly be done to how brains process risk and reward.

In humans, it's thought that low levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin might make one more risk-prone and impulsive. Perhaps, the scientists say, future work will shed light on the source of pathological gambling, obsessive-compulsive disorder and even depression.

Dave Scharf Bio - Poker Player

Although his father taught him poker at a young age, and there were frequent poker games for nickels in the neighbor’s basement, it was not until Dave read Edward Thorpe's seminal, Beat the Dealer in 1980 that he became fascinated with the idea that you could win at gambling. Throughout his six year university education Dave supplemented his navy income with semi-professional blackjack play in British Columbia and Oregon. In the early 1990's, however, poker was introduced to Canadian casinos and his passion switched because although blackjack is profitable, it does not offer the enduring intellectual challenge of poker. Nor does blackjack offer the adrenaline pumping thrill of poker.

Dave was the sole publisher of Canada's first poker magazine – Canadian Poker Monthly – in 1997 and 1998. He is a founding partner and shareholder in Fifth Street Publishers Ltd. In that role, he was the original editor of Canadian Poker Player Magazine and he was the designer of the first season of the Canadian Poker Tour

His poker columns have appeared since 1997 in a variety of periodicals and websites: Canadian Poker Monthly, Poker Digest, Buzz Daly's Players' Choice, Western Player, PokerFan.com, Card Player Magazine, PokerForum.ca, Gutshot.com, and UnitedPokerForum.com to name a few.

He has acted as a poker consultant to several Canadian casinos, usually assisting with the design of poker tournaments. And, although Dave plays ring games daily at www.ParadisePoker.com and www.PlanetPoker.com, his passion is tournament poker:

1998 Winner, Station Poker Classic
1998 5th place, WSOP $1500 7-Stud/8 (270 entrants)
2000 Winner, Emerald Casino No-Limit Championship
2001 27th place, WSOP $2000 No-limit hold’em
(350 entrants)
2002 Winner, Station Poker Classic
2002 Winner, Canadian Poker Championship
2004 94th place, WSOP $10,000 No-limit Championship (2600 entrants)
2005 Winner, Emerald Casino Limit Hold’em Championship

There are many smaller tournament victories – online and in traditional casinos. In fact, Dave is one of the longest standing online poker players in the world. He was among the original customers at the first online room: www.PlanetPoker.com. And, he has played online virtually every day since May 1, 1998.

Lastly, Dave is the author of the well regarded book, Winning at Poker: Essential Hints and Tips (Arcturus, 2003) which is an excellent introduction to hold’em and 7-stud.

Dave defines himself as a semi-professional player because he still makes his primary living from his other passion, radio. In “real life” he is the host of Saskatoon’s favorite morning radio program (Rob, Shauna, and Rambling Dave on C95).

He is married to Heather (a family physician), and is the father to two fine young men (Arthur 9 and Oliver 5). He has two university degrees: Bachelor of Philosophy (Univ. of Sask., 1985) and Bachelor of Laws (Univ. of Sask., 1988). He has, at various times, made all or part of his living as a lawyer, naval officer, radio broadcaster, waiter, restaurant manager, stand-up comic, writer, paper carrier, gardener, vacuum cleaner salesman (no, really), photographer, and professional gambler.

He is the host of www.UnitedPokerForum.com which is an excellent online source for poker discussion that will improve your game.

He will be the Captain of Team Planet at the 2006 World Series of Poker.

And, he is a proud member of Team Canuck Poker (monthly tournaments at www.ParadisePoker.com). Fear the beaver, baby. Fear the beaver.

Bumvertising™ Poker advertising campaign

Bumvertising™, or the use of sign holding vagrants to advertise, is a development of PokerFaceBook.com's most recent advertising campaign. Homeless men are able to provide a valuable and tangible service to a company, while receiving an additional revenue stream in combination with their normal donations from begging.

Benjamin Rogovy, president and chief economist of Front Door Enterprises, developed this system after realizing the enormous potential in wasted homeless labor. Bums use a business model that takes advantage of high volume traffic, with the expectation that, on average, a certain number of people will donate to them in the form of cash, clothing, or food. Some people, by principle, will never give a homeless man money. Some will give food to them whenever they can. But what is the use of holding up a bum sign to 99% of car traffic that will only read but never donate to these vagrants? With such great exposure, Mr. Rogovy imagined that there had to be some value that was not being utilized.

Through his own effort and the assistance of his marketing team, Mr. Rogovy developed signs and accumulated the resources that most bums would find attractive. Money, sandwiches, chips, apples, water, and other beverages have all been dispensed in order to compensate the homeless in the Seattle Bumvertising™ campaign.

It is also Mr. Rogovy's belief that bums will incur higher revenues from donations after showing the initiative to seek out semi-legitimate employment. Many of the vagabonds of PokerFaceBook.com's Bumvertising campaign remark that they are receiving more comments and questions than ever. "People are actually reading my signs!", remarked Robert, one of PokerFaceBook.com's most loyal derelicts. "I thought they just handed me a dollar but never read what I was saying."

Currently, the highest concentration of Bumvertisements are being placed at the on and off ramps of I-5 at the 45th and 50th street exits. Please learn more about some of the Bumvertising campaign's most important assets at the gallery.

Poker Web Pledges African Famine Support

A Call For Help Africa!

(San Jose, Costa Rica) Aug 15 th 2005,

Poker is riding into the winds of history and it’s all happening before our very eyes. As an avid contributor to this day’s hottest game The Poker Web has shared in some incredible moments to cover today’s poker related news. We now call on the efforts of poker players to help in the cause of the African Famine.

With a staff that has garnished respect throughout the Internet for it’s coverage of today’s greatest poker related stories and poker news articles, the team of The Poker Web has dedicated its pledge to call upon all poker players throughout the world to contribute to the world’s greatest living tragedy. When the Tsunami of Dec 2004 devastated the hundreds and thousands of lives throughout SE Asia the world watched in horror as the sea raged against man. As content as one is to pray for relief, it would only befit that we ask all who love the game and can contribute to save the lives of what is happening today in Niger and it’s surrounding countries. As calls went unheard to their impending fate last November the world stayed silent. As Live 8 tried to gather the support for relief to the world’s poorest the call for Famine Aid remained silent. And as cries for help remain unheard it is now time for action.

We make a call to all that if you love the game of poker as much as we do to help in this day’s terrible fate of our fellow brothers and sisters in Nigeria. Many might think that this is all semantics to the day’s news or another story of great catastrophic consequence but I tell you it is not. These people need our help and this call for help is real.

Nigeria's 'Silent Famine'
When BBC World recently started broadcasting the pathetic pictures of starving children from Niger, a complacent world was shocked beyond belief.

The stories are endless as well as the cry that claims the lives of 3.6million people. Can you make a difference? The question is staged but it would be well to ask, will you make a difference? Our call is simple; we ask that if there is anything you can do to help to please do it. As we have tried to bring the call for Aid to the Famine that now touches the lives of Millions we ask you to step up to the table and make a pledge. If you’re part of an online poker room we ask that you set up charitable poker tournaments and forward the proceeds to established organizations designed to bring the aid to the affected. It is well noted that when the Tsunami tore through SE Asia Hollywood Poker stepped up its game by contributing. Go James and Company. Now that’s what it’s all about.

In summation to the fun that we enjoy on a daily basis by playing today’s greatest enjoyable pastime, Poker. Let us try to make it more enjoyable by helping those who can’t help themselves. It is our duty as men and women of this wonderful world we live in. Please don’t let this call go unheeded.
