BELLEVILLE, Ill. The mayor of Belleville is warning the organizers of Texas Hold 'Em tournaments to discontinue holding the games if they're not sure whether the games are legal.
Mayor Mark Eckert says the tournaments have become popular fund-raisers for groups. But he says the state has strict rules regarding the gambling card games.
Eckert suggests organizers call the Illinois Department of Revenue to find out if their tournaments are legal.
The Specialized Living Center in Swansea had planned to hold a fund-raising Texas Hold 'Em tournament at a Belleville bowling alley but decided to postpone the tournament when it found out it needed a gambling license.
Eckert says the city doesn't want to stop charities from raising money but needs to warn people that the law is strict when it comes to gambling.
