DURHAM -- A court bid to legalize poker by branding it a game of skill rather than chance was postponed Thursday until March 10.
The case pits The Joker Club, which wants to open a poker-betting establishment in Durham, against District Attorney Jim Hardin Jr., who has said such a move would be illegal.
State law makes it a misdemeanor crime to bet on games of chance.
But The Joker Club is asking a judge to declare that poker is exempt because it is a game of skill.
Hardin is represented in the case by the state Attorney General's Office, which has agreed with him that betting on poker is illegal.
