BOSTON -- Authorities are taking a closer look at some clubs and charities sponsoring high-dollar poker tournaments.
The Boston Herald reports that a lot of the popular Texas hold 'em games may be operating outside the law. State officials are concerned that more of the winnings may be going to the players than to charities, which would be against the law. And they say some non-charity games also may be operating against the rules.
The attorney general's office says it is preparing some guidelines for charities running poker tournaments. Jamie Katz, chief of the attorney general's Public Charities Division, says regulators don't want to shut down legitimate fund-raisers.
Boston's head of consumer affairs, Patricia Malone, said she's also concerned about illegal games going on in city bars.
