CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) -- Jacques Kallis was undefeated on 47 at tea as South Africa reached 164 for three wickets Sunday on the first day of the third of five tests against England.
Kallis was the mainstay of a 75-run partnership for the third wicket with his captain Graeme Smith until Smith departed for 74.
He was given not out on 70 by umpire Darryl Harper when he swept a ball from Ashley Giles onto his pad and it ballooned up for wicketkeeper Geraint Jones to run around for an easy catch.
An over later, Smith edged a drive onto Jones's thigh, and the ball looped up for Marcus Trescothick to take an easy catch.
But, for the rest, Kallis was untroubled, dealing with any problems posed by any of the bowlers with comparative ease.
Earlier, Matthew Hoggard took the wicket of Herschelle Gibbs to give England the early advantage at lunch at Newlands Stadium, which South Africa reached at 78 for two.
Gibbs shouldered arms to a straight delivery and had his off stump uprooted for four.
Just 15 minutes before lunch, Simon Jones managed to find the inside edge of Jacques Rudolph's bat for the third time -- and had him caught by wicketkeeper Jones for 26, instead of seeing the ball racing fine for four.
The dismissal broke up a good partnership of 61 for the second wicket.
Smith won the toss for the third time in the series, and elected to bat. He was undefeated on 43 at lunch, but it was hardly a flawless innings. He played a few shots in the air through a staggered slip cordon, and edged Andrew Flintoff just short of the wicketkeeper and Trescothick at first slip.
Also undefeated at lunch was Kallis on four.
England won the first test by seven wickets and the second was drawn.
