Poker is becoming a big sport in Galway with private poker houses springing up around the city, and now for the first time poker enthusiasts will be able to compete at a local level for large prize pools.
A new series of poker tournaments organised by Poker Events and Grooveyard Entertainment will be launched in Galway next week, and will continue to Cork and Dublin for heats before the grand final in Dublin in June.
All events planned are NL Texas Hold'em Freeze Outs and the Galway satellite games will begin next Wednesday in the Westwood Hotel in Galway. There is a € 50 buy-in and a guaranteed € 4,000 prize pool.
Six players from each of the weekly satellite games will qualify to compete in a super-satellite to be held on March 4 and 5. There is a €250 buy-in for this event giving players the opportunity to win an estimated €45,000. From the super-satellite, three winners will qualify to compete in the grand final in Dublin.
The grand final carries a €100,000 guaranteed prize pool with the winner going on to compete in the VC Cup. This event is for 16 players, qualifiers only. Nine of the players will qualify from the Poker Events super-satellite games; three players from each of the Galway, Cork and Dublin games. The other seven players will qualify from VC Poker online tournaments and a VCpoker pub challenge.
