GRAY (AP) — A new video-poker truck-stop casino will soon go up in Terrebonne Parish, although its location close to a high school has at least one Parish Council member concerned.
Redman of Louisiana Incorporated representative Keith Ardoin says Redman officials chose a location in Gray because of its easy access to U.S. Highway 90 and because lots of motorists pass that spot.
Ardoin says the truck stop casino will be at least 500 feet away from H.L. Bourgeois High School.
Parish officials had considered increasing the distance to 1,000 or 1,500 feet after Councilwoman Teri Cavalier said she was concerned about the casino being close to the school.
Assistant Parish Attorney Courtney Alcock advised against the change, because she said it would be difficult to defend in court.
The truck stop would bring the number of mini-casinos in Terrebonne to 10 and push the number of video poker machines past 1,000.
Ardoin said Redman representatives plan to appear before the Houma-Terrebonne Regional Planning Commission soon to submit site plans.
