BOSTON -- President Bush has a simple message for badly outnumbered Massachusetts Republicans: "Don't despair."
Speaking Tuesday with the Boston Herald's editorial board, Bush listed the state's last three governors, all Republicans: William F. Weld, Paul Cellucci and Mitt Romney. "Those are people who won elections in a tough state -- which shows it is possible," he said.
Bush is friendly with Weld, Cellucci and Romney. He said he lost a poker game to Weld last time they met. Bush made Cellucci his ambassador to Canada. Romney had been rumored as a potential Cabinet pick.
"So my advice is do not despair -- and up-and-coming conservative-oriented political people ought to find a way into the system," Bush said. "Run with a big heart and (do) not be afraid to take on the big challenge of running."
He added, "I would hope the Democrats would say the same thing about Texas."
