Minnesota Bill Would Allow Poker Tournaments

MINNESOTA – As reported by the Pioneer Press: "You can play cribbage for prize money in Minnesota, and you can play euchre, pinochle and bridge for prizes.

"But when David Bischoff started sponsoring Texas Hold'em tournaments at his St. Cloud bowling alley last year and offered T-shirts and caps as prizes, police and the state Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division raided the business and confiscated his poker chips.

"State Sen. Dave Kleis, a St. Cloud Republican, on Wednesday announced legislation that would make it clearly legal for Bischoff and other tavern and bowling alley owners to host Texas Hold'em tournaments.

"Kleis' bill would include Texas Hold'em — a variant of poker popularized by cable television — with the other card games, such as bridge and whist, that already are specifically authorized under Minnesota law to be played in public tournaments where prizes total no more than $200.

"…Under current law, already can place social bets on Texas Hold'em and other poker games in their homes, provided the host of the game does not charge a fee or take a cut of the action. But under the law, even if Kleis' proposed amendment is enacted, people would not be allowed to bet money in any public poker tournaments…"
