First Annual Bikers Care Poker Run

Hundreds of bikers packed into the Island Grill in Port Wentworth yesterday. They were reaching into their hearts and pocketbooks to help a girl in need.

"We had a great time and it was for a good cause," said biker Vern Syms.

It was for 17-year-old Stacey Bryant. She's a senior at South Effingham High School and she has liver cancer.

"It's pretty amazing, because I don't know most of them," she said. But she knows they care. "I appreciate everybody doing it for me."

The fundraiser was organized by Stacey's friends and family.

"She just means a lot to us and we'd do anything we can to help her and support her any way we can," said friend Katie Riefkovich.

"Her mother was able to work until the child got sick," said organizer Sherry Kirkland. "She's not able to work now so in order to help the family out and help with medical expenses and get the car fixed and everything, we decided to come together and get the bikers together and have the first annual Bikers Care poker run."

Several local business pitched it to donate cash and prizes for the event. By sundown it was clearly a success. They raised almost $5,000. Every penny will go to help the Bryants.

They hope to help other families in the Coastal Empire in the years to come.
