ATLANTA (Sports Network) - Will Bynum poured in 21 points and dished out seven assists to lead the ninth-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets past the Miami Hurricanes, 80-69, in a hard fought ACC contest.
Bynum, who got the start for the injured B.J. Elder, finished the game 8-of-15 from the field, while Jarrett Jack contributed 14 points for the Yellow Jackets (10-2, 1-0 ACC), who rebounded from their 70-68 setback to Kansas on January 1.
Guillermo Diaz matched a career-high as he scored 27 points to lead the Hurricanes (9-3, 0-1), who saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end.
Trailing 11-10 early in the contest, the Yellow Jackets went on a quick 11-0 burst, sparked by a pair of three-pointers by Anthony Morrow, to go up 22-11.
Morrow finished with 11 points and went 3-of-6 from three-point range.
Bynum scored 12 of his 21 points in the first half to help Georgia Tech claim a 46-32 lead heading into the locker room. Jack added 10 points in the half.
The Yellow Jackets finished 16-of-30 from the floor including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc over the first 20 minutes.
Miami, meanwhile, struggled from three-point range, sinking just 3-of-10 in the first half and connecting on 34 percent from the field.
In Cincinnati, Jason Maxiell led the way with 19 points, as No. 23 Cincinnati downed DePaul, 83-54, in the Conference USA opener for both teams at Fifth Third Arena.
Armein Kirkland added 18 points for the Bearcats (12-1, 1-0 C-USA), who suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of top-ranked Illinois on New Year's Eve, but began their conference campaign with a big win.
Quemont Greer tallied 12 points for DePaul (8-4, 0-1), which saw its three- game winning streak halted. LeVar Seals added nine points in the loss.
The Bearcats took control early in this one, jumping out to big lead through the first nine minutes of the opening half. Jihad Muhammad connected on the first of several first-half three-pointers to jump-start the surge while Maxiell contributed key buckets.
