Poker Welcomed Home

"It's really booming here," Negreanu said over the clatter of chips and bets. "This tournament is a major push for the bar industry."

Since Rakers' owner George Kandaharian has been holding the competitions at his bar -- still reeling from the smoking ban and hockey lockout -- he said business has doubled.

International Poker Tours promotes poker as a recreational sport and a test of mental dexterity. The idea of gambling takes a backseat to the idea of the game itself.

"This is what proved to me that poker and gambling are not synonymous," said Negreanu, who shares the same play-for-fun philosophy.

Some of the funds raised by International Poker Tours will go to the Canadian Charity Association.

Negreanu is also reminding everyone to play Sun Fun Poker in the Toronto Sun every day for a chance to win cash, a 2005 Ford Mustang and other great prizes. See Page S24 for full details.
