The Bellagio Five Star World Poker Classic is moving along in Las Vegas this week, and the numbers continue to be very strong. I like to keep a keen eye on the health of live events and the Five Star shows that the trend is still growth at an amazing pace.
Sunday's Event #6, No Limit Hold'em ($1500 + $70) featured a total of 483 entries, a number that continues the upward trend to the tune of about 35% when compared to last year's preliminary events average. Scott Levy, owner of an internet marketing company near Dallas, Texas, took home a first place prize of $228,680 and a $25,000 seat in the WPT Championship. Not too shabby. Interestingly, according to the Las Vegas and Poker guys, Sam Wasserkrug (of Henderson, NV) decided to pick up his chips and voluntarily accept third place when they were down to three. Sounds likes a deal to me, but...no judging from the rail here.
Any way you look at it, it's simply a great time to be at the Bellagio. Later today, Event #7 ($2000 + $80 NLHE) will wrap up and Event #8 ($2500 + $100) begins. Howard Lederer took down last year's $2500 event, and the field should be even stronger today. The big game, WPT's $25,000 Championship, begins next Monday.
