Focal point: Dwight Freeney vs. Drew Brees

By Mark Schlereth

Dwight Freeney has the advantage here because he's too fast to be covered by just one player. He's playing incredible football right now and is absolutely terrorizing offensive lines. He has accumulated eight sacks in his past three games against good competition. In those games, he's seen several different kinds of coverage, but nothing has been able to stop him. Heck, he put up two sacks against Jonathan Ogden and he's arguably the best left tackle in the game.

The Chargers will have to throw different coverages out there to keep Freeney off of Drew Brees and that's going to limit their offensive options. The Chargers will probably have to keep tight end Antonio Gates in a little while longer on the line of scrimmage to chip Freeney and stop him from getting off the line unfettered. They will also use running back LaDainian Tomlinson to pick him up occasionally as if Freeney was a blitzer. Those two options will limit the Chargers' offensive possibilities and may hurt the team. That's why Freeney has the advantage in this matchup.

The Chargers realize they are playing against one of the best pass rushers in the game and will react accordingly. I don't expect this team to allow Dwight Freeney to run unfettered into the backfield. The Chargers will do everything possible to keep pressure off Drew Brees so that he can take advantage of this poor defense. To do that, they'll have the tight end chip Freeney as he comes off the line of scrimmage. They'll also occasionally keep the running back and fullback in the backfield to pick him up.

The Chargers will have to sacrifice some of their offensive prowess to keep Freeney away from Brees, but it'll be worth it because they have enough weapons to still put up points. The Chargers also possess a great running game that will help stop Freeney from taking off after the quarterback with his ears pinned back. He'll have to worry about seeing running back LaDainian Tomlinson running past him if he does that.
